Portuguese farmers demand 140 million euros to boost competitiveness
The Confederation of Portuguese Farmers (CAP) has threatened to intensify protests if the government does not provide support to restore the sector's competitiveness against Spain. During a demonstration near the Assembly of the Republic in Lisbon, approximately 150 agro-forestry leaders demanded a 140 million euro package to offset rising production costs, specifically for fuels and fertilizers.
CAP President Álvaro Mendonça e Moura stated that the goal is not subsidies, but rather creating conditions for Portuguese farmers to compete internationally. He highlighted that Spanish support for agricultural diesel is double that of Portugal (20 cents versus 10 cents per liter) and that fertilizer support in Portugal is significantly lower than in Spain.
In response, Minister of Agriculture José Manuel Fernandes noted that while the government has increased farmer income by over 200 million euros annually, a specific 162 million euro support package for competitiveness is slated for 2027 due to European regulatory constraints. He also addressed separate concerns from shepherds regarding Iberian wolf attacks, stating the government is working to increase compensation and implement protective measures like fencing and livestock guarding dogs.
Other business associations, including the Portuguese Business Association (AEP), have also criticized the 2027 State Budget proposal, describing it as lacking the ambition necessary to drive economic growth and business competitiveness.
