Portuguese Catholic Church focuses on digital mission and communication

The Portuguese Catholic Church recently held significant gatherings focused on the evolution of religious communication in the digital age. During the 1st National Meeting of Digital Missionaries in Alfândega da Fé, a message from Pope Leo XIV was delivered via Cardinal Pietro Parolin. The Pope urged digital missionaries to act as a “network that liberates, clarifies, congregates, fraternizes, dignifies and saves,” emphasizing that they should avoid self-promotion and polarization while remaining faithful followers of Christ in digital spaces.

In a separate event, the National Social Communication Days concluded with remarks from Bishop Alexandre Palma, President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Communications. Palma stressed the importance of coordinated communication efforts across dioceses, particularly in preparation for a potential papal visit. He called for the development of a three-year action plan to improve institutional communication, digital content creation, and the ability of media collaborators to listen effectively, rather than just providing performative information.
