Portuguese Catholic dioceses launch new community and migrant support initiatives
Religious leaders in Portugal are launching new pastoral initiatives focused on community engagement and migrant support.
In the Algarve, Bishop Vitorino Soares has introduced the ‘FAROL’ initiative, which stands for Faith, Welcoming, Relationship, Prayer, and Connection. The program aims to increase the Bishop's presence within parish communities through dialogue and listening to understand the concrete realities of local parishioners, priests, and laypeople. The name ‘Farol’ (Lighthouse) was chosen to symbolize the light of faith and a guiding presence.
Simultaneously, the Archdiocese of Évora is inaugurating the ‘Church of the Peoples’ at the Convento Novo church. Led by Father Rafael Morais, this project is designed to welcome and accompany migrant communities. The initiative seeks to create a space for spiritual and human support, fostering harmony between migrants and the local Portuguese population while encouraging migrants to participate actively in Christian community life.
