Portuguese cattle ranching traditions in Alentejo and Graciosa
Traditional bull breeding practices are highlighted through two distinct Portuguese regions: the Alentejo plains and the island of Graciosa in the Azores.
In Alentejo, the Murteira Grave ranch, located at Herdade da Galeana in Mourão, has been breeding fighting bulls since 1944. Founded by Manuel Joaquim Grave, the ranch has spanned three generations, establishing a presence in major arenas such as Madrid's Monumental. The operation combines scientific expertise, led by veterinarian Joaquim Grave, with long-term field observation and selection processes.
On the island of Graciosa, the Manuel Silva ranch is deeply integrated into local Azorean culture, specifically through 'touradas à corda' (rope bullfights) and community festivals. The ranch's involvement in local celebrations, such as the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres, underscores the connection between cattle breeding and regional identity. Recent cultural efforts include the first Festival de Capinhas held in July 2025, which celebrated the traditional participants who engage with the animals using capes or umbrellas.
