Portuguese cinema attendance surges in August
Portuguese cinemas experienced a significant surge in activity during August, with attendance reaching nearly 1.8 million spectators. This represents an 83.5% increase compared to the same month in the previous year, according to data from the Instituto do Cinema e Audiovisual (ICA).
Monthly revenues rose by 110.8%, climbing to 13.2 million euros from 6.3 million euros in August of the prior year. For the first eight months of the year, total attendance reached 8.5 million, an 11% increase over the same period in 2025. Cumulative revenue through August reached 59.4 million euros, up 21.8% from the previous year.
The growth was largely driven by the release of ‘Spider-Man: A New Day’, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, which attracted approximately 669,000 viewers and generated 5 million euros in revenue. Other notable performers included Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’, which saw 363,000 viewers, and the domestic film ‘Playback’ by Sérgio Graciano, which drew nearly 40,000 spectators.
