Portuguese courts issue five rulings in sibling assault dispute

A legal dispute between two siblings, both teachers, has resulted in five different court decisions in Portugal over the past two years. The conflict began in 2024 when a woman filed a criminal complaint against her brother, alleging he pushed her against a wall, causing abrasions to her left arm and hand.

The judicial process has seen conflicting outcomes. The Matosinhos Court initially acquitted the brother of simple physical injury and civil damages. However, the Porto Court of Appeal later overturned this, convicting him and ordering him to pay a fine and compensation. This conviction was subsequently annulled by the Supreme Court of Justice due to procedural nullity regarding the scope of the court's review.

The case has been reviewed twice by the Porto Court of Appeal and twice by the Supreme Court of Justice, involving various acquittals, convictions, and postponements.
