Portuguese filmmaker Pedro Costa awarded the Robert Bresson prize
Portuguese director Pedro Costa has been honored with the Robert Bresson prize, an Italian cinema award presented by the Fondazione Ente dello Spettacolo and sponsored by the Holy See. The prize, which recognises a filmmaker whose work testifies to the spiritual search of humanity, will be handed to Costa on 5 September during events held alongside the Venice International Film Festival in Italy. It is the only cinema award granted by the Vatican and follows earlier recipients such as Manoel de Oliveira in 2001. The ceremony is supported by the Vatican dicasteries of Culture, Education and Communication. Costa, whose previous films including "O Sangue" (1989), "Ossos" (1997) and "Onde jaz o teu sorriso?" have been shown at Venice, was praised for merging aesthetic radicalism with ethical commitment.
