Portuguese hospitals implement advanced oncological medical techniques

Portuguese healthcare institutions have implemented new advanced surgical and diagnostic techniques to improve oncology care.

The ULS Almada-Seixal has introduced endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) for the first time. This technique allows for the evaluation of the tracheobronchial tree and adjacent lymph nodes using an ultrasound probe. It provides a less invasive alternative to surgical procedures like mediastinoscopy for diagnosing and staging lung diseases, particularly in respiratory oncology.

Separately, the Hospital de Aveiro, in collaboration with the Champalimaud Foundation, successfully performed its first skin- and nipple-sparing endoscopic mastectomy with immediate reconstruction. This emerging surgical technique uses a single, smaller incision compared to conventional surgery, aiming to improve aesthetic outcomes and patient quality of life while maintaining oncological safety.
