Portuguese leaders debate labor law reform and economic strategy

During a conference on labor law reform in Lisbon, leaders expressed differing views on the direction of Portugal's employment legislation. José Eduardo Carvalho, president of the Portuguese Industrial Association (AIP), advocated for the decentralization of labor negotiations, suggesting that companies should have a more direct role in defining working conditions for their employees.

Carvalho criticized the rigidity of current labor laws and noted that 30% of Portuguese workers have remained with the same company for over 20 years, linking this lack of mobility to youth unemployment rates. He also expressed skepticism regarding the effectiveness of current social dialogue frameworks.

Miguel Cabrita, a deputy for the Socialist Party (PS), argued that while labor laws are subject to necessary evolution, a reform of the Labor Code alone cannot resolve Portugal's structural issues regarding productivity and competitiveness. Cabrita criticized the government's approach, stating that such reforms should be preceded by more rigorous studies, evaluations, and a broader economic strategy focused on investment, technology, and qualification.
