Portuguese literary and journalism prizes awarded to Serafim and Mendonça

Journalist Teresa Serafim has won the 29th Orlando Gonçalves Literary Prize in the Journalism category for her reportage titled ‘Barracas na área de Lisboa: o regresso de um problema que nunca desapareceu’. The multimedia investigation, published in Público, examines the persistence of illegal and precarious housing settlements in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, including Almada, Amadora, and Loures, while revisiting the impact of the Special Relocation Program (PER).

In a separate literary event, the 6th João Augusto d’Ornelas Literary Prize was awarded by the Câmara de Lobos municipality. The first prize went to the short story ‘O Retornado’ by Jorge Mendonça, praised by the jury for its creative use of inverted temporal narrative. The second prize was awarded to Joana Neves for ‘A Biblioteca dos Bêbados’, and the third prize went to Sebastião Alves for ‘A Garrafa de 1895’. The competition required themes related to Madeira wine or vineyards.
