Barreiros Mayor confronts doctors during hospital inspection

Carlinhos da Pedreira, the mayor of Barreiros, Pernambuco, conducted a surprise inspection at the Jailton Messias de Souza Albuquerque Municipal Hospital following complaints regarding long patient wait times. During the visit, the mayor encountered two doctors, a man and a woman, in a staff rest area. He accused the professionals of sleeping and engaging in intimate behavior while patients were waiting for care, using offensive language and ordering them to leave the premises.

The Regional Medical Council of Pernambuco (Cremepe) and the Pernambuco Medical Union (Simepe) have both issued statements repudiating the mayor’s actions. They condemned the public exposure and humiliation of the professionals, noting that any concerns regarding medical shifts or service quality should be addressed through official institutional and legal channels rather than public confrontation. Simepe stated that the recorded footage does not prove the intimate behavior alleged by the mayor.

Following the incident, the municipal government announced the termination of the management contract with the Associação João Paulo II, the organization responsible for operating the hospital. The municipality will temporarily assume direct control of the facility while preparing for a new bidding process to ensure the continuity of healthcare services.
