Portugal's National Agriculture Fair Launches in Santarém

The Feira Nacional da Agricultura (FNA 26) opened at the CNEMA in Santarém, running until 14 June. Ministers of Environment and Energy Maria da Graça Carvalho and Agriculture José Manuel Fernandes attended the inauguration, emphasizing water as a strategic priority for farming and announcing €800 million of water‑related investments, including an increase of the Alqueva reservoir capacity and new dams at Girabolhos and Pisão.

Regional exhibitors highlighted local products. The Madeira stand, described by exhibitor Filipe Ornelas, attracted large visitor numbers and strong sales of honey‑based drinks and pastries. Regional Secretary of Agriculture Nuno Maciel stressed the importance of a dignified Madeira presence after a two‑year absence.

The Médio Tejo inter‑municipal community showcased traditional foods from Abrantes and Vila Nova da Barquinha, earning a gold medal for a walnut cake and promoting tourism through daily events across the fair. The theme of the event, "The Great Power of Small Fruits," underlined the growing economic relevance of these crops.

Overall, the fair combined policy announcements, substantial water‑infrastructure funding, and widespread regional product promotion, positioning it as a key platform for Portugal's agricultural sector.
