Portuguese MP defends live animal exports

Pedro do Carmo, a Socialist Party deputy, has advocated for the continuation of live animal exports by sea to third countries, arguing against total prohibitions on the economic activity.

During a parliamentary discussion regarding a bill proposed by the JPP—which sought to restrict such exports to countries failing to meet animal welfare standards—the proposal was ultimately rejected. Do Carmo stated that instead of banning the practice, the focus should be on strengthening inspections, increasing accountability for non-compliance, and enforcing stricter transport requirements.

He emphasized that protecting these exports is essential for the competitiveness of Portuguese agriculture, the sustainability of rural areas, and national food sovereignty. Do Carmo also noted the importance of aligning with evolving European Union legislation to ensure that animal welfare protections do not unfairly penalize European producers or cede market share to international competitors operating under different regulations.
