Portuguese municipalities demand fair compensation for renewable energy hosting

Portuguese municipalities, through the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), are demanding fair compensation and territorial justice for hosting renewable energy infrastructure. During a plenary meeting in Coimbra, the ANMP's Renewable Energy Municipalities Section unanimously approved positions to ensure local territories benefit economically from the energy transition.

Key demands include a more equitable distribution of Municipal Property Tax (IMI) revenue for renewable energy infrastructures that span multiple municipalities, which currently faces legislative difficulties in revenue sharing. Additionally, municipalities are seeking greater participation in defining renewable energy acceleration zones and territorial benefits related to carbon credit projects.

Ana Rita Dias, president of the section and Mayor of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, emphasized that municipalities do not oppose the energy transition but insist it must be accompanied by planning, respect for municipal autonomy, and concrete benefits for the populations living near these installations.
