Portuguese municipalities expand affordable housing initiatives
Municipalities in Portugal are expanding affordable housing initiatives to address rising rental costs. In Lisbon, the city has delivered 60 new units in the Flamenga neighborhood of Marvila. Funded by approximately €15 million from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the project includes apartments ranging from T0 to T4, commercial spaces, and public area improvements such as green spaces and cycling networks.
Lisbon Mayor Carlos Moedas stated the program targets residents struggling with high rents, noting that monthly costs are kept below one-third of a resident's income. The city also offers a municipal subsidy to cover the difference for those paying more than one-third of their earnings.
In Tomar, the municipal executive has approved a project to construct eight additional affordable housing units in Choromela. The new four-story building will feature T1 and T3 apartments, a decision made to meet specific demand identified in recent housing applications. This project follows the construction of three existing municipal buildings in the same area.
