Portuguese municipalities implement new waste management measures
Municipalities in Portugal are introducing various measures to improve public hygiene and waste management services.
In Évora, Vice-President Jerónimo José announced updates to the city's cleaning and public hygiene services. The local government has acquired new vehicles and equipment, and implemented shift-based services to allow for nearly continuous operational capacity. Additionally, certain responsibilities for urban hygiene and green space maintenance will be transferred to local parish councils starting in January, including the management of green areas within the historic center and wall zones.
In Abrantes, Mayor Manuel Valamatos has called for increased inspection regarding waste separation. During a municipal executive meeting, the mayor emphasized the need to reinforce public awareness campaigns, particularly concerning organic waste containers. He advocated for stricter oversight to ensure that incorrect waste disposal does not increase costs for all citizens or hinder recycling and treatment processes. The municipality is considering various collection models, such as door-to-door or community containers, to suit different areas of the municipality.
