Portuguese municipalities invest in local healthcare infrastructure

Municipalities in Portugal are expanding local healthcare services through significant infrastructure investments. In Valongo, the Sobrado Family Health Unit (USF São João de Sobrado) has undergone renovation and expansion. Funded by a 470,000 euro investment from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), the project added four new clinical consultation rooms to improve service capacity and physical conditions.

In Cinfães, a 436,000 euro rehabilitation project at the local health center has introduced a new ophthalmology office, reducing the need for residents to travel to Penafiel for specialist care. The municipality also partnered with the Tâmega e Sousa Local Health Unit to launch ‘Saúde Mais Perto’, a mobile health unit that will visit all local parishes to provide basic care, preventive screenings, and vaccinations. Additionally, upgrades to X-ray facilities and preparations for new diagnostic equipment and mental health units are underway.
