Portuguese municipalities launch initiatives to boost youth participation

Municipalities in Portugal are implementing new initiatives to increase youth involvement in local governance and development.

In Caminha, Mayor Liliana Silva announced the creation of a Youth Participatory Budget and a Youth Art Biennial. These measures follow the UP. Caminha forum, an event designed to connect students and young entrepreneurs with local institutions to foster economic and social opportunities within the municipality.

In Vila Nova de Poiares, the Municipal Youth Council met to present proposals for the 2027 Municipal Budget. Mayor Nuno Neves emphasized the importance of young citizens acting as active participants in policy construction rather than just recipients of public services. The council's contributions will be compiled into a formal opinion for the municipal executive to consider during strategic planning.
