Portuguese municipalities recognized for social and sports excellence
Several Portuguese municipalities have been recognized for their social and health initiatives at the IV Cidade Social Congress.
Águeda Municipality emerged as one of the most distinguished, securing eight Municipal Excellence Awards, including four 'Diamond' and four 'Gold' honors. These awards cover diverse sectors such as sports, youth, culture, health, social action, tourism, and the environment. Notable projects include 'Pedal in Águeda' and the 'Social Radar' intervention program.
Vila Real Municipality received three national awards specifically in the sports sector. The municipality earned two 'Diamond' recognitions for its 'Vila Real Mexe Comigo' and 'Bilíadas' projects, which promote physical activity and community engagement. It also received a quality award for the 'Bila Sénior' program, aimed at promoting healthy aging.
In Vila Nova de Poiares, the local government is launching the 2026/2027 edition of the 'Fit Sénior' program. This initiative targets citizens aged 60 and over, offering activities such as Boccia Sénior, Walking Football, and guided walks to combat social isolation and improve physical autonomy.
