Portuguese municipalities seek funding for increased responsibilities

The National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP) is calling for the 2027 State Budget to provide sufficient financial resources to match the increasing responsibilities transferred to local governments.

Flávio Massano, vice-president of the ANMP, stated that municipalities have assumed expanded competencies in sectors including civil protection, education, social action, and health. He emphasized that the budget must reflect these new duties to ensure local authorities can effectively serve their citizens. The association is also seeking predictability and stability as they await the revision of the Local Finance Law, expected early next year.
