Portuguese Navy to acquire three FREMM EVO frigates from Fincantieri

The Portuguese Navy is set to significantly bolster its maritime capabilities through the acquisition of three new FREMM EVO frigates from the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. The program, valued at approximately 3.9 billion euros, includes technology transfer and support services, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2030.

Admiral Jorge Nobre de Sousa, Chief of Staff of the Navy, noted that the initial package does not include helicopters. This decision follows the recent modernization of the existing Lynx Mk95 fleet, which has extended its operational lifespan until 2035. The new vessels are capable of operating with organic helicopters or drones for anti-submarine warfare.

A key feature of this procurement is a 30-year logistical and operational management model. For the first time, the program includes the first major maintenance cycle for the ships, scheduled around 2035, with all necessary spare parts already accounted for in the acquisition.

The FREMM EVO frigates are highly automated 144-meter vessels designed for anti-submarine warfare, air defense, and maritime surveillance. They utilize a CODLAG propulsion system, allowing for silent operation during low-speed maneuvers and high speeds via gas turbines. The ships feature a maximum speed of approximately 27 knots and an operational range of 6,000 nautical miles.
