Portuguese Parliament approves JPP housing and tax proposals

The Portuguese Assembly of the Republic has approved two initiatives presented by the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party aimed at supporting families and improving housing availability.

The first initiative, Resolution Project No. 1073/XVII/1.ª, focuses on reinforcing the ‘IMI Familiar’ (Family Property Tax). It recommends that the Government increase deductions based on the number of dependents, establish mechanisms to preserve the tax's real value over time, and adopt a reinforced regime for the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira to account for costs related to insularity.

The second initiative, Resolution Project No. 982/XVII/1.ª, concerns the identification, transparency, and mobilization of public real estate assets for housing purposes. The goal is to ensure more effective use of state-owned property to address housing needs.

JPP deputy Filipe Sousa stated that while the parliamentary approval is a significant step, the party expects the Government to transform these recommendations into concrete decisions quickly to address the ongoing housing and financial difficulties facing families.
