Portugal Parliament approves extension of paid parental leave

The Portuguese Parliament has approved an extension of paid parental leave, a move hailed by the government as a significant victory for families. Under the new rules, which take effect on January 1, 2027, parental leave will be paid at 100% for the first 150 days if not shared, or for the first 180 days if shared between both parents.

The legislative package also includes provisions for single parents and victims of domestic violence, ensuring they receive 100% payment for the first 180 days. Additionally, the reform introduces a continuous workday model for parents with children up to 12 years old, allowing them to leave work earlier.
