Portuguese Parliament rejects cost-of-living relief measures

The Portuguese Parliament has rejected 14 legislative initiatives and resolutions intended to mitigate the rising cost of living. Among the rejected proposals were those from the Chega party, which sought to reduce VAT on fuel from 23% to 13% and provide VAT exemptions for essential food items. Additionally, a resolution from the Socialist Party (PS) proposing a temporary reduction in fuel VAT and food VAT exemptions was rejected for the third time.

Other rejected measures included proposals from the Livre party to reduce gas VAT to 6% and from the Bloco de Esquerda (BE) regarding food VAT exemptions. During the debate, which lasted over two and a half hours, political tensions were high, and the Government was not present.

Separately, President António José Seguro has promulgated decrees to extend exceptional and temporary fuel compensation for the agricultural, forestry, fishing, and aquaculture sectors. This extension follows government approval to prolong support for agricultural diesel until the end of the year, with an estimated expenditure of 15 million euros. The President also promulgated a decree expanding the scope of the 'Passe Ferroviário Verde' to include urban transport services.
