Portuguese Parliament rejects defense oversight and veteran pension proposals
The Portuguese Parliament has rejected two separate legislative proposals regarding defense and veteran welfare.
In the National Defense Parliamentary Commission, parties including PSD, Chega, and CDS-PP voted against a proposal by the PS to create a subcommission to monitor military acquisitions funded by European SAFE loans. While the PS argued that increased scrutiny is necessary due to a lack of transparency in the process, opposing parties claimed the move would duplicate existing work and that current commissions are sufficient for oversight.
Additionally, the Parliament rejected two proposals aimed at increasing financial support for former combatants. A proposal by Chega to establish a minimum special pension supplement of 300 euros for veterans was defeated by votes from PSD, PS, and CDS-PP. A separate initiative by the PCP, which sought to create a lifelong monthly supplement and ensure no veteran receives less than the national minimum wage, was also blocked by the PSD and CDS-PP.
