Portuguese Parliament Rejects Labor Code Reform, Union Leader Cries

On 19 June, Portugal’s parliament voted down the government’s proposal to reform the Labour Code. Only the centre‑right parties PSD, CDS and IL supported the bill, while the opposition PS and Chega opposed it.

The defeat prompted Tiago Oliveira, secretary‑general of the CGTP union federation, to break down in tears inside the chamber, a moment described as one of the most striking images of the political year. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro seized the occasion to attack Chega leader André Ventura, saying “André Ventura is today a brake on progress and an adversary of youth.” He also linked the debate to broader issues such as immigration and social cohesion.

The episode highlighted deep divisions over labour reforms and the role of the far‑right Chega party in Portuguese politics.
