Portuguese Parliament to debate flexible teacher hiring for private schools

The Portuguese Parliament is set to discuss two legislative initiatives proposed by the CDS-PP and Iniciativa Liberal (IL) aimed at relaxing teacher recruitment rules for private and cooperative schools.

The proposals seek to increase the autonomy of private educational institutions by allowing them to hire professionals who may lack specific current qualifications, provided they are subsequently evaluated by the school's pedagogical leadership. Proponents argue that valuing professional experience could help mitigate teacher shortages in the education system.

The initiatives faced criticism from other parliamentary groups. During plenary debates, proponents requested that the bills be sent to the Education and Science Committee for specialized discussion without an immediate vote, a request that was approved unanimously. The debate also highlighted political divisions, with members of the Chega party questioning the distinction between qualification standards for public versus private sector teaching.
