Portugal housing crisis sparks protests and police evictions

Protests against the rising cost of housing have escalated in Portugal, leading to police operations to clear protest camps in Lisbon and Porto. In the early hours of Tuesday, the Public Security Police (PSP) moved to dismantle encampments at Lisbon’s Rossio Square and Porto’s Praça D. João I. The operations resulted in 55 arrests and reports of minor injuries.

While authorities described the interventions as professional and focused on dialogue, demonstrators characterized the police actions as aggressive. In Lisbon, protesters formed human chains to resist the clearing of approximately 200 tents. Some activists have called for an “Iberian general strike” to coordinate with movements in Spain.

The unrest comes amid a severe housing shortage, with property prices more than doubling since 2017. The Governor of the Bank of Portugal, Álvaro Santos Pereira, has warned that the shortage is a social emergency requiring urgent public and private investment. Politically, the crisis has intensified debates over rental reforms and eviction laws, with opposition leaders calling for immediate solutions within the State Budget to support families facing high rent-to-income ratios.
