Portuguese police uncover illegal senior residence in Sintra
Authorities in Portugal have uncovered severe irregularities at an illegal senior residence in Belas, Sintra. During a joint inspection by the Public Security Police (PSP) and health officials, investigators found evidence of serious maltreatment and public health risks. Elderly residents were reportedly found isolated in rooms, sometimes immobilized with sheets to non-adjustable chairs. Concerns were raised regarding room security, as doors lacked handles, suggesting residents might have been locked in at night.
Additional findings included improper medication management, with drugs stored in food refrigerators, and a lack of nursing facilities or trained staff. The property was also noted for its advanced state of degradation and lack of required legal licensing. The case has been referred to the Public Ministry.
In a broader context, the PSP reported findings from its annual “Solidarity Has No Age” operation conducted across urban centers. Between July and September, the police made 2,240 individual contacts with elderly citizens, identifying 461 individuals in need of signaling and 294 who were found in high-risk situations. The primary vulnerabilities identified include a lack of autonomy and the absence of social contact networks.
