GNR and PSP security forces threaten protests in Portugal

Seven associations and unions representing the Guarda Nacional Republicana (GNR) and the Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP) have united to demand an urgent meeting with Minister of Internal Administration Luís Neves. The groups have issued a one-week deadline for a response, threatening a cycle of national protests if their demands are not met.

The primary grievances include the failure to fulfill a 2024 agreement regarding salary revisions and career structures. Specifically, the organizations are seeking to equalize the risk allowance (subsídio de risco) provided to GNR and PSP officers with that of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) inspectors. They claim that members have lost approximately 9,000 euros since 2024 due to this discrepancy.

Protest actions are scheduled to take place between late September and late October. The ASPP/PSP has already outlined a calendar of demonstrations in cities such as Porto, Lisbon, Leiria, and Faro, alongside a petition. The GNR's professional association has also announced a series of protests that will culminate in a large-scale national action in October.
