Portuguese political parties clash over housing and immigration debates
Political tensions have escalated in Portugal regarding the scheduling of parliamentary debates on housing. The political party Livre attempted to schedule an urgent debate on the housing crisis, but the President of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, denied the request. The denial was based on scheduling regulations, specifically a requirement for a 15-day interval between urgent debates, as a debate requested by the Chega party had already been scheduled within that timeframe.
In a separate discussion regarding the intersection of social issues, Mariana Leitão, leader of the Iniciativa Liberal, addressed the impact of immigration. While distancing herself from comments made by Defense Minister Nuno Melo, Leitão noted that a substantial influx of people in a short period affects various sectors, including housing, healthcare, and education. She criticized major political parties—PSD, Chega, and PS—for failing to effectively address these societal challenges.
