Portuguese regional authorities prioritize health and housing funding

In Viseu, municipal authorities are prioritizing health and housing projects following low execution rates of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). Mayor João Azevedo and Councilor Marta Rodrigues indicated that the municipality will seek alternative financing and renegotiate with the central government to fund the rehabilitation of 66 properties for housing and the construction of several health units, including the requalification of Centro de Saúde III in Jugueiros.

In the Azores, the 2027 budget proposal designates health as the primary priority, forecasting a €270 million increase in sector funding to reach a total of €760 million. This increase includes €30 million from the regional budget, €80 million in extraordinary transfers from the State Budget, and €160 million through the conversion of commercial debt into financial debt to ensure timely payments to suppliers. The Regional Health Service's share of total regional expenditure is expected to rise from 22.8% in 2026 to 31.2% in 2027.
