Portuguese regions implement sustainable mobility initiatives

Portuguese intermunicipal communities are launching initiatives to promote sustainable mobility and reduce automobile dependency.

In the Algarve, the Comunidade Intermunicipal do Algarve (AMAL) has introduced the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS Algarve 2.0). A diagnostic report indicates a significant rise in vehicle dependency, noting that the number of insured light vehicles in the region grew by 36% between 2016 and 2025, increasing from 288,000 to 391,000. The plan aims to align regional mobility with national and European decarbonization goals by improving public transport and service integration.

Meanwhile, the Comunidade Intermunicipal da Beira Baixa is implementing projects under the European TRANSCOM_EUROACE program. These initiatives include a Sustainable Urban Mobility Study and the establishment of a fast-charging network for electric vehicles. The charging network will install 16 new rapid-charging points across eight municipalities. This project emphasizes cross-border cooperation between Portugal and Spain, specifically involving the Extremadura region.
