Portuguese residents report high dissatisfaction with urban quality of life
A survey by the Francisco Manuel dos Santos Foundation reveals that one-third of Portuguese residents are dissatisfied with their cities. The satisfaction rate in Portugal stands at 70%, significantly lower than the 86% reported by European residents in a European Commission study.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) reports the lowest quality of life satisfaction at 58%. Residents in this region expressed particular dissatisfaction with urban environment factors, including noise (35% satisfaction), air quality (40%), and urban cleanliness (30%). Additionally, satisfaction with primary healthcare in the AML is only 39%, trailing the national average of 53%.
In contrast, the Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP) shows higher satisfaction levels at 76%. While metropolitan areas are primarily pressured by the housing crisis, residents in other cities expressed greater concern regarding a lack of employment opportunities. Small coastal cities outside metropolitan areas reported the highest satisfaction levels regarding health and education services.
