Portuguese schools launch initiatives to promote healthy eating
Educational institutions in Portugal are implementing programs to encourage healthy dietary habits among students. In Seixal, the Escola Básica Paulo da Gama is hosting a ‘Soup and Fruit Week’ from October 12 to 16 to mark World Food Day. The initiative involves approximately 900 students from the 5th to 9th grades, who use a passport system to track their daily consumption of soup and fruit in the school cafeteria. Supported by the Seixal Municipality, the Portuguese League Against Cancer, and E. Leclerc, the program awards diplomas to participants who complete the challenge.
In Águeda, the Escola Básica de Valongo do Vouga is organizing an Autumn Fair on October 16. The event focuses on seasonal products such as pumpkins, chestnuts, apples, pears, and grapes. The fair aims to strengthen ties between the school and the local community while educating students on the importance of seasonal consumption, local agricultural production, and traditional eating habits.
