Police and GNR officers protest in Ponta Delgada over working conditions
Hundreds of Public Security Police (PSP) agents and National Republican Guard (GNR) officers gathered in downtown Ponta Delgada, Azores, to protest against working conditions and career progression.
Paulo Santos, president of the PSP Union Association, cited staff shortages, an aging workforce, and a lack of community policing as critical issues affecting the country. He also noted that the government has failed to fulfill guarantees made in a 2024 agreement regarding risk allowances, salary tables, and professional status.
César Nogueira, president of the GNR Professionals Association, stated that the protests are justified, noting that more than two years have passed since an agreement was signed without a concrete proposal from the government to resolve issues affecting the Azores, Madeira, and mainland Portugal.
