Portuguese SMEs Gain Awards as Government Rolls Out €182.5 M Support Package

The municipality of Amarante announced that 85 local firms have been granted the "PME Líder 2025" status by IAPMEI and Turismo de Portugal, up from 74 the previous year. The recognitions span construction, engineering and real estate (39 firms), wholesale and retail trade (22), industry and manufacturing (13), services (6), tourism (4) and transport & logistics (1). Mayor Jorge Ricardo highlighted the awards as evidence of entrepreneurial dynamism and the region’s growing attractiveness for investment.

Separately, the Portuguese government unveiled a €182.5 million programme aimed at modernising micro and small businesses nationwide. Critics argue that the continual need for public funds signals deeper structural problems, stating, "O problema nunca foi a falta de dinheiro. Foi sempre o excesso de Estado." The debate centres on whether such subsidies impede genuine productivity and private investment.
