On 27 July 2026 the Portuguese government raised fuel taxes, causing gasoline prices to rise by more than 30 cêntimos per litre and diesel by more than 44 cêntimos per litre. The state will collect over nine cêntimos per litre of diesel and six cêntimos per litre of gasoline in additional tax revenue, bringing total fuel‑tax contributions since the government took office to over €1.048 billion. The Socialist Party’s secretary‑general, José Luís Carneiro, accused the PSD/CDS‑PP administration of profiting from the increase and called for a temporary cut in the VAT on fuel from 23 % to 13 %.

The government offset most of the extra VAT through discounts on the fuel‑product tax (ISP), returning €139.2 million of the €141.9 million extra VAT collected, leaving a net gain of about €2.8 million. Meanwhile, Interior Minister Luís Neves faces parliamentary scrutiny over alleged irregularities in construction contracts, an unlicensed pool, and a seized drug‑laden trailer linked to a police investigation. The Socialist Party demanded swift explanations, while Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said Neves would provide information in the coming days. The president of the Assembly, José Pedro Aguiar‑Branco, rejected an opposition request to summon Neves to a permanent parliamentary committee due to lack of consensus.
