Portuguese Socialist leader José Luís Carneiro slams government over labour reform

On 15 June 2026, José Luís Carneiro, secretary‑general of Portugal’s Socialist Party (PS), accused Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s government of taking part in a “baile de máscaras” with far‑right leader André Ventura of Chega over proposed changes to labour legislation. Speaking at the West Sea shipyards in Viana do Castelo, he said the government was “taken by inhumanity, taken by insensitivity” and warned that a pact between PSD and Chega could emerge, adding the cryptic remark “O Diabo veste Prada”.

Earlier, Carneiro was the guest of RTP Notícias’ “Grande Entrevista”, where he analysed the PS’s opposition role, proposals on the single social benefit, the first 100 days of President António José Seguro, and a judicial case involving party members. The interview highlighted the party’s strategy against the current government’s labour agenda.
