Portuguese State to acquire 13.7% stake in REN

The Portuguese State is set to become the second-largest shareholder in the energy infrastructure company REN by acquiring a 13.7% stake from Pontegadea Inversiones, the holding company of Amancio Ortega. The transaction is valued at approximately 380 million euros, a figure that includes a premium of roughly 55 million euros over recent market prices.

Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro defended the price, stating that the premium is justified by the relevance of the stake and the advantage of acquiring a large block of shares at once, which avoids driving up market prices through gradual purchases. The deal currently awaits a prior audit from the Court of Auditors.

While the government views the move as a way to increase national presence in a strategic sector, market analysts have expressed skepticism regarding the high premium paid for a minority position that does not grant direct control. State Grid, the Chinese state-owned utility, remains the largest shareholder with a 25% stake.
