Portuguese Universities Invest €20 million in AI Data Centres and Advanced Magnet Research

The University of Lisbon announced a €20 million investment to build two new data centres dedicated to artificial‑intelligence and high‑performance computing. One centre will be at the Instituto Superior Técnico campus in Oeiras and the other at the Faculty of Sciences campus in the University City, with construction phased through to October 2028. The facilities will host a sovereign cloud for storing and processing sensitive scientific data, supporting projects in AI, deep‑tech, biotechnology and other digital‑economy sectors, and will serve both academic researchers and industry partners.

Separately, the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) is reported to be collaborating on the development of advanced magnets for future technologies, contributing to Portugal’s broader push to strengthen research infrastructure and high‑technology capabilities within its universities.
