Portuguese wine industry expands sustainable production and certification

The Portuguese wine sector is seeing increased adoption of sustainability practices. In the Alentejo region, the Comissão Vitivinícola Regional Alentejana (CVRA) reported that over 35% of the region's wine production now holds a sustainable certification through its Sustainability Program for Alentejo Wines (PSVA). This milestone includes 30 certified producers, covering more than 5,750 hectares of vineyards, which represents over 25% of the total vineyard area in Alentejo.

Concurrently, the wine company Sogrape is advancing its 'Seed the Future' Global Sustainability Program. Launched in 2021, the initiative focuses on three pillars—Planet, Legacy, and People—with long-term goals set through 2042. Sogrape is investing in technological innovation, such as a network of 34 meteorological stations across Portugal, to improve resource management and vineyard resilience against climate change.
