Portulaca and Cyclamen: Summer Watering Tips for Balcony Gardens

Portulaca is a succulent native to South America that thrives in hot, dry conditions. In summer it should be watered sparingly, roughly every two to three days, allowing the soil to dry completely between irrigations. Excess moisture causes root rot, so any water that collects in the saucer must be discarded promptly. Good drainage is essential; use pots with ample holes and a light, porous substrate mixed with sand or perlite. Watering is best done early in the morning or late in the evening, aiming at the soil rather than the foliage.

Cyclamen, by contrast, is a cool‑season plant that enters dormancy during the hot months. It should be placed in a shaded, well‑ventilated spot away from direct sun. Water only occasionally, just enough to keep the medium slightly moist, and avoid over‑watering. Remove faded flowers and yellow leaves, but otherwise leave the pot unchanged until autumn. No fertiliser is needed until the plant resumes growth in the cooler season.
