Posadas and Encarnación commemorate centenary of 1926 cyclone

The cities of Posadas, Argentina, and Encarnación, Paraguay, are holding commemorative activities to mark the centenary of the 1926 weather event popularly known as the ‘Ciclón’. The phenomenon, which occurred in September 1926, caused significant material damage and numerous casualties in Encarnación, while also affecting the port area of Posadas.

Researchers note that while popularly called a cyclone, some historians suggest the event may have been a waterspout. The tragedy is cited as a historical milestone that strengthened the bonds of solidarity between the two river cities, as Posadas organized assistance operations for the victims in Paraguay.

Commemorative events include a gathering at the Logia Roque Pérez in Posadas, which opened its doors to the community to showcase historical artifacts and honor the connection between the two regions. Further activities conclude with a ceremony at the Instituto Montoya.
