POSCO Pohang Steelworks implements AI-based motor inspection system

POSCO's Pohang Steelworks has implemented an AI-based motor status inspection system at its cold rolling mill. Developed directly by onsite employees from the EIC Technology Department and Rolling Equipment Department, the system utilizes big data and artificial intelligence to modernize equipment inspections that previously relied on the experience of skilled workers.

The system targets Tension Bridle Roll (TBR) motors, which are critical for maintaining consistent tension as steel sheets move through the production line. By analyzing equipment data over a four-month period, the AI can diagnose motor conditions and identify irregular movements or early signs of abnormalities. This allows for predictive maintenance, enabling the facility to transition from emergency repairs to planned maintenance and prepare necessary parts in advance.

This implementation aims to prevent sudden equipment shutdowns, reduce maintenance time and costs, and enhance production stability. Following successful verification at the cold rolling mill, POSCO is expanding the application of this system to its electrical steel sheet plant and plans to integrate AI-based management across various production processes to accelerate the realization of a smart steelworks.
