Görlitz–Zgorzelec’s Cross‑Border Cultural Revival Highlights European Unity
The historic city of Görlitz, split by the Lusatian Neisse river into the German side and the Polish side known as Zgorzelec, has become a showcase for cross‑border cooperation. Despite the legacy of post‑World‑War II border changes and population transfers, the two towns now operate joint municipal services, bilingual schools, and shared cultural programs under the European Union’s framework. Initiatives include combined police and fire departments, joint bus routes, and numerous bilingual cultural events that aim to reinforce the “Europe City” identity and heal lingering historical divisions.
The collaborative model reflects broader EU efforts to strengthen regional cohesion in border areas, offering a living example of how shared governance and cultural exchange can bridge past conflicts and foster a unified European community.
