Post Office Time Deposit: Comparing 3-year and 5-year returns

The Post Office Time Deposit (TD) scheme, backed by the Indian Ministry of Finance, offers a secure investment option with sovereign guarantees on principal and interest. For investors looking to deposit ₹10 lakh, the scheme provides different tenures with varying interest rates.

A 3-year TD currently offers an annual interest rate of 7.1%, which would yield approximately ₹2.13 lakh in total interest over the three-year period. In contrast, a 5-year TD offers a higher annual interest rate of 7.5%, resulting in an estimated total interest of ₹3.75 lakh.

Choosing the 5-year tenure over the 3-year option can generate approximately ₹1.62 lakh in additional interest, though it requires locking in the funds for two extra years. Additionally, the 5-year scheme provides tax benefits under Section 80C. Interest is calculated on a quarterly basis and credited to the investor's account annually.
