Post-quantum cryptography advances in blockchain and digital identity
Developments in post-quantum cryptography are advancing across blockchain and digital identity infrastructures. In the cryptocurrency sector, researchers are testing methods to protect Bitcoin from future quantum threats. StarkWare recently conducted an experimental quantum-resistant transaction on the Bitcoin mainnet using a scheme that combines hash-based one-time signatures with computational searches. Additionally, Blockstream researchers proposed a Bitcoin Improvement Proposal to implement the SHRINCS signature scheme, which aims to provide post-quantum security despite larger signature sizes.
In the digital identity space, vendors are integrating quantum-resistant protections into mobile credentials, public key infrastructure (PKI), and secure hardware. Following NIST's standardization of specific algorithms in 2024, companies such as Fobi AI, WISeKey, and Atsign are implementing hybrid key establishment and digital signature updates to prevent future decryption of captured data.
Separately, Solana validators approved a proposal to increase the network's annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%. This change, known as SGP-0002, is expected to reduce total SOL issuance by 18.9 million over the next six years.
