Postbiotics identified as key factor in gut health support
Postbiotics are emerging as a significant factor in digestive wellness, functioning alongside prebiotics and probiotics to support gut health. Unlike probiotics, which are live bacteria, postbiotics are inanimate bioactive compounds produced during the fermentation process when microorganisms break down dietary fiber and prebiotics.
These compounds, such as short-chain fatty acids, serve as a primary energy source for the cells lining the gastrointestinal tract. By providing fuel to these cells, postbiotics help support and maintain the gut barrier function. While prebiotics act as non-digestible food components that feed beneficial bacteria, and probiotics provide live beneficial microorganisms, a hybrid approach involving all three may offer the most comprehensive support for the gut microbiome.
