Renewable energy sector sees major global acquisitions and expansions

The renewable energy sector is seeing significant activity through major acquisitions and infrastructure expansions. In the United States, Enel has finalized the acquisition of an 810 MW solar portfolio from Excelsior Energy Capital for approximately $760 million. This move is part of a broader strategy to expand its North American renewable capacity toward a target of over 13 GW.

In Europe, Qualitas Energy has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Cero Generation’s European platform from Macquarie Group. The deal includes a 5.8 GW portfolio across the UK, Italy, and Spain, consisting of over 2 GW of operational or near-ready assets and a 3.8 GW development pipeline.

Italy is experiencing a surge in solar capacity, with 3.1 GW installed in the first half of 2026, outperforming the EU average. Poste Italiane is contributing to this trend, having surpassed 1,000 photovoltaic installations with a total capacity of 31,700 kWp, aiming for 1,300 plants by year-end. Meanwhile, Juniper Green Energy has commissioned 35 MW of wind capacity in Gujarat, India, as part of a larger hybrid project.

Regulatory discussions in Italy are also underway, with the Alleanza per il Fotovoltaico calling for stable rules regarding grid connections and energy storage to support continued investment.
